Crime shows on TV

Police and Crime Dramas

What do you think about the promo for the crime drama “Luther” in the video above? Does the video make you want to watch the series?

Crime shows have been a typical staple of the TV lineup for years, and probably will continue to be. New ones come out every year – from the States and the UK, of course, and probably from every other country that produces TV shows. Have you ever watched any of these crime dramas? Each has a different atmosphere and characters, but all of them involve stories of the police investigating and solving crimes.

NYPD Blue (NYPD stands for “New York Police Department”)
CSI (Crime Scene Investigation)
Taggart (A Scottish detective programme)

For this blog post, we’d be happy to hear your comments: Why do you think people like crime dramas so much? Do you watch any shows that feature police investigations? Just tell us the name of the show and your opinion of it.

In my opinion people like crime dramas because they have very interesting plots. I sometimes wonder if they are only scriptwriters’ imagination or they really happened and they were an inspiration for scriptwriters. The crime dramas series keep viewers in tense to the end of the show. I think that people like to be investigators while they are watching and they are trying to solve cases along with investigators in films. They also show new technologies which are used in investigations. Although the technologies are very interesting, they sometimes seem to be unbelievable.
I like watching crime dramas very much. I watch all kinds of CSI series, but in my opinion CSI: New York is the most interesting of all. I also watch programmes like “Police Investigators” or “Road Wars”, which show real policemen during work. The cameraman follows them filming how they track more or less serious criminals down or how they catch drivers breaking the rules on roads.

Hi Marta,

Thanks for the comment! I really like crime dramas, and probably for the same reasons you mention – the suspense and the satisfaction of trying to solve a mystery.

This video definitely would make me want to see the new crime drama. But to be honest I am not fan of that kind of drama. I’m not saying it is not interesting but I just don’t enjoy it. There is so many crimes and violence around the world and all the crime stories seems to be based on the true stories so you start thinking that it can happen to you as well. I prefer watching Grey’s Anatomy drama about doctors, their unusual patients and personal problems and relationships.

Hi Asia,

Thanks for the comment. I’ve only one seen one episode of Grey’s Anatomy, but really liked it. It clever, funny and I enjoyed the characters – very fresh and original. Good recommendation!
